Embracing the night: The allure of the Singapore Circuit

The Singapore simracing track stands apart from its counterparts, with the allure of racing under the night sky (in the game, it is optional). As the city comes alive with vibrant lights, the challenge intensifies for drivers navigating tight corners and unforgiving straights. Embrace the electric atmosphere and immerse yourself in the essence of night racing, where precision and focus are paramount for conquering the urban jungle.

Modifications of the track for F1 2024

Recently the track was updated, so there have been alterations made to the circuit.

Please note that in this blog, we’ll be focusing on providing insights into the track as it existed prior to these changes. However we give an overview on the new parts of the track and the changes of the needed settings. The difference between the previous and the current track can be seen in the number of corners. Due to the modification, 4 low speed corners were taken out between corner 15 and 20. Now, the drivers have the chance to race on the new part, a straight, which provides more opportunity for takeovers. Also, the exiting of corner 14 to the straight became crucial. Here, the racers cannot count on the drs, only the incidental slipstreams will help them taking over and leaving the others behind. There is no need for major changes in the car settings on the new track, however the downforce shall be decreased because of the change. This alteration might result in a more challenging drive in the other low speed parts of the track. And now, back to the previous layout!

Key points to keep in mind

Suspension strategies

To maximize your potential on the track, it's crucial to strike a balance with your suspension settings. While stiffer suspension might seem tempting to tackle for easier turning of the car, you have to consider the curbs on this track. It is worth using all of the curbs, but be cautious as the SIngapore track has rather high ones. This is why it is suggested to ride the painted part of the curb only, and make sure to go on it with just the wheels and not the whole car. With a stiffer suspension, these curbs cannot be used as efficiently, because it can lead to undesirable consequences and throw off the car. This technique shall be used throughout the track, except corners 1, 2, and 10 where it is highly recommended to cut through the inner lines. For these sections the suspension firmness has to be chosen carefully due to the many 90 degree turns, so a responsive setting is needed, but there is a bigger camber and toe out that helps.

Tire temperature management

Overheated tires can be a real challenge, particularly the rear ones, as you exit the numerous low and medium-speed, 90 degree turns. Maintaining optimal tire temperature is paramount to avoid compromising your performance. Consider opting for lower tire pressure, which can help manage heat buildup and provide enhanced grip on the track. By finding the right balance between tire pressure and track conditions, you'll gain the edge needed to conquer those critical corners.

Unraveling the corners

The delicate exit of Corner 14

As we approach the exit of Corner 14, the white line bordering the track narrows inward, enticing us to push our limits. However, caution is essential, as venturing beyond the track can invalidate our lap and compromise our overall performance. To navigate this section with precision, rely on the 100 meter sign as a reliable reference point for braking. But, during races, resist the urge to force a hard braking distance, as Sector 3 demands optimal grip. Maintaining your tires within their operational range is vital to ensuring the necessary traction and acceleration through this critical corner.

Corner 18

Corner 18 presents a hair-raising challenge, requiring absolute control over your braking distance. Miscalculating this aspect can lead to a disastrous collision with the wall. If you find yourself unsure about taking the turn, resist the temptation to force it. Instead, opt for the run-off area to avoid a potential crash. The black LED panels displaying flags serve as excellent reference points to initiate your braking maneuver, offering valuable assistance in mastering this high-stakes corner.

General challenges

Nailing the 1-3 Corner combination

In the 1-3 corner combination, many simracers struggle to find the perfect balance between braking and precision. Braking too early in corner 1 can result in lost time, while corner 3 presents a narrower entrance that often leads to compromised exits. To conquer this sequence with finesse, it's essential to cut the curbs in corner 2 while remaining mindful of the track's borders. By doing so, you'll maintain momentum and optimize your chances for a smoother exit from corner 3.

Tackling the 10-12 Corner combination

The 10-12 corner combination poses unique challenges, as drivers often lose valuable time by not utilizing the inner curbs of corner 10 to their advantage. Failing to cut through these curbs sufficiently results in a larger steering angle and lower corner minimum speed, leading to unnecessary slowdowns. Additionally, caution should be exercised in corner 11 to avoid excessive braking and maintain an ideal speed through the corner. By fine-tuning your approach to this combination, you'll gain a competitive edge and shave precious seconds off your lap times.

Insider insights

Corner combinations

Navigating interconnected corner combinations demands a strategic approach. Whether it's the challenging 1-2-3, 10-11-12, 15-16-17, 18-19, or 20-21 sequences, it's essential to focus on making the last corner of each combination the best. While preserving speed through previous corners is crucial, prioritize the exit of the final corner to set yourself up for a successful lap. Utilize the full width of the track except in those combinations above, where a careful balance between corners will lead to superior performance.

Braking with precision

Achieving optimal braking requires precision and technique, especially in corners 10, 13, and 16. This is because the track narrows down on the right, before the corner. The car must almost hit the wall, where you have to brake with a straight steering wheel to use the most optimal braking distance. In this way, you have the optimal racing line, with great positioning to start the next corner combination.

Downforce

Selecting the right package with high downforce is crucial, given the numerous slow and medium-speed corners on the track. Close to the maximum downforce settings, consider slightly reducing the rear wing to strike a balance between cornering stability and top speed on the straights. This setup will not only aid you in tackling the corners efficiently but also provide a competitive advantage during overtaking opportunities in the heat of the race.
